Akabare chillies—translated as “King of Chillies”—are one of Nepal’s most prized indigenous chilli varieties. Known for their intense heat and distinct fruity aroma, these vibrant red chillies are a staple in Nepali households, adding a fiery kick to pickles, curries, and spice blends. Rich in capsaicin, Akabare chillies not only enhance flavor but are also valued for their medicinal properties, including boosting metabolism, aiding digestion, and providing antibacterial benefits.
Characteristics of Akabare Chillies:
- Scoville Heat Units (SHU): 100,000 – 350,000
- Distinct fruity aroma
- Bright red color when ripe
- High capsaicin content (intense spiciness)
- Grown in high-altitude regions
- Used in pickles, curries, and spice blends
Akabare chillies are often confused with Dalle Khursani, also known as “Round Chillies.”
Where They Are Grown:
Primarily cultivated in the eastern hills of Nepal, districts such as Ilam, Taplejung, and Panchthar have long been recognized for producing high-quality Akabare chillies. The unique climate and soil conditions of these regions contribute to the chillies’ signature spice level and aroma, making them stand out from other varieties grown globally.
Expanding Beyond Nepal:
As we expanded our reach beyond Nepal, we began perfecting the art of drying Akabare chillies to maintain their rich color, flavor, and potency. Last year, we took a significant step by exporting a small consignment of dried Akabare chillies to the USA, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. Importers were eager to source more, recognizing the superior quality and authenticity of Nepali-grown Akabare.
Interestingly, the samples we sent out to importers abroad, as well as local exporters in Nepal, led to reorders from nearly all of them. This strong demand reaffirmed what we have always believed—Nepali products, when processed and presented well, have immense potential in the international market.
As Akabare production continues to grow in Nepal, we see great opportunities to further explore and expand the export of this fiery gem. Our goal is not just to cater to the Nepali diaspora, who cherish the taste of home, but also to introduce Akabare chillies to spice lovers around the world. By doing so, we aim to create more value for Nepali farmers while bringing authentic flavors from Nepal to global kitchens.
