Nepal produces about two-thirds of the globe’s supply. Yet, if you glance at the world’s top cardamom exporters, Nepal’s name is nowhere to be found. Instead, you see giant countries topping the charts.

So, why is Nepal missing from the spotlight?

Here’s the secret: nearly all of Nepal’s large cardamom about 98 to 99% first makes its way to India. There, it is re-packed before being again shipped to markets across Pakistan, the Gulf states, and beyond. Sometimes Nepalese cardamom changes hands seven or eight times before arriving at its final buyer, adding even more distance between the spice and its true origin.

The outcome?

Nepal grows this world-class spice, but the global market rarely knows it. Imagine if Nepal could build direct export links, invest in local grading and packaging, and proudly brand its product as “Nepali Large Cardamom.” Not only would the country get the recognition it deserves, but farmers could also earn higher prices.

Until then, our fragrant hills will continue producing cardamom that travels the world and often hides behind someone else’s name.
